2007 edition:
Newsletter of the Sydney Schubert Society Inc Volume 27 – No 1, March 2007 |
Dear Members and Friends of the Sydney Schubert Society,
I am very pleased to be able to share our 2007 program
of events with you and hope you will be able to join us for all Schubertiades this
year. We will commence the year with a Schubert Society Benefit Concert. Despite
excellent Schubertiades, much audience enthusiasm and good attendance in 2006 the
society still experiences financial strain. We hope you will support this concert
and make a donation to enable us to continue & enhance our future programs.
In 2007 we have decided to place more emphasis on art-song
and will present three concerts with a focus on Schubert’s “Lieder”.
Singers from the studio of Maree Ryan, who presented a splendid concert
in 2006, will return in May. The young and outstanding
tenor David Greco will present
a recital which will include Schubert’s song cycle
Die
Schöne Müllerin
and David Miller, one of our most distinguished
piano exponents of Schubert’s chamber music and Lieder works, will present his choice
of Schubert including Schubert part-songs. The year concludes with a performance
of the Trout Quintet by the Schubert
Ensemble of Sydney.

Schubert Symphonies
Complete performance cycles of the symphonic works by
one composer have become increasingly common in the past years.
Sydney
recently heard the complete symphonies by Brahms and will hear all of Beethoven’s
symphonies in June from the Sydney Symphony. When will we hear all of Schubert’s
symphonies? It may be that some of these wonderful works may never have been performed
here. In my 17 years with the Sydney Symphony I played (if my recollection is correct)
Nos. 2, 5, 8 and 9 only. In 2007 two audience favourites will be heard again in
Sydney
. On March 30 and 31 we can look forward to a performance of Schubert’s Symphony
no 5 in Bb major at the Sydney Conservatorium with the Conservatorium Chamber Orchestra
and in December 5, 7 & 8 the Sydney Symphony will perform the Great C major
symphony (No 9).
