Andrew Finden, Baritone
Andrew sang at Schubertiade 325.
Originally from Warwick in south-east Queensland,
Andrew is a graduate of the University of Southern Queensland where he received
numerous prizes, including the coveted Joyce Cambell-Lloyd Scholarship. While at
the USQ, Andrew performed the roles of Dr Bartolo (The Marriage of Figaro), Ben
(Menotti's The Telephone), Macheath (The Beggars' Opera) and Billy Bigelow (Carousel).
Andrew is currently in his final year of a Diploma of Opera at the Sydney Conservatorium
of Music, under the tutelage of Associate Professor Michael Halliwell. In 'Con'
productions he has performed the role of Il Conte Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro,
Act III) and Ernesto (Haydn's Il mondo della luna). Andrew has also performed the
oratorio roles of Adam (Creation), Elijah (Elijah) and the Baritone Soloist (Vaughan
William's Five Mystical Songs). Throughout his studies he has sung in a number of
masterclasses, including those by renowned pedagogue Janice Chapman, and BBC Operatunity
judge Mary King.
Last year Andrew won the Sydney de Vries Memorial Award for Baritone, in the City
of Sydney Eisteddfod and was a finalist in the National Aria Competition. He was
also a finalist in the Australian Singing Competition Mathy Awards, winning the
Phoebe Patrick Award, Nell Pascall Award, the Royal Northern College of Music Award
and the Nelly Apt Scholarship which will allow him to attend the IVAI Summer Course
in Tel Aviv with the Artistic Director of New York's Metropolitan Opera. The Mathy
Awards final, with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Richard
Bonynge, was broadcast nationally on ABC Classic FM.
In February Andrew joined the choir of Canttilation for Brahm's Deutsches Requiem
at the Sydney Opera House, and is currently preparing the roles of David (Barber's
A Hand of Bridge), Dr Gregg (Moore's Gallantry), and Masino (Haydn's La Vera Constanza)
for Sydney Conservatorium Opera School productions this year.
In October Andrew will be taking up a scholarship to the prestigious Guildhall School
of Music and Drama in London.
