Matthew
Thomas has a broad and diverse background in the arts. Initially working as an actor,
in recent years his focus has shifted towards opera. He holds undergraduate
qualifications in advertising and art history and a Master of Music from the Australian National University, where he was the recipient of the University House Scholarship
for Singers.
He is presently a student in the Opera Studio of the Sydney Conservatorium.
As a soloist
he has appeared with companies including Opera Queensland, Tokyo Experimental
Opera, Canberra Symphony Orchestra, ANU and UC Choral Societies, and the Royal Military
Band Duntroon. He has also performed as a chorister with Opera Australia &
IHOS Opera.
In 2004
he was the youngest person ever appointed to the ACT Cultural Council, advising
the territory government on arts and cultural policy whilst simultaneously maintaining
positions on a number of boards and committees in both Government and the Arts.
In 2005 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the cultural industries
he was the ACT recipient of the Young Australian of the Year Award.
